“Great moments are born from great opportunity.”
— Herb Brooks, Miracle
That line may have been delivered in the context of hockey, but it speaks just as powerfully to the future of policing.
Law enforcement has a great opportunity right now.
An opportunity to move beyond simply answering call after call, taking report after report, and repeating the same cycle without ever getting ahead of the problem.
An opportunity to think differently.
To ask better questions:
Who is involved?
What is driving the problem?
Why does it keep happening?
When and where is risk highest?
How can data, partnerships, and proven strategies help us intervene more effectively?
This is where proactive, evidence-based, and problem-oriented policing matter most.
Real impact is not created by doing more for the sake of activity. It is created by doing what is purposeful, informed, and effective. It is created when law enforcement professionals step back, study the problem, understand the patterns, and apply the right strategies to deter, disrupt, and prevent harm before it happens.
The old mindset of “that’s how we’ve always done it” is no longer enough. The “good old days” approach will not solve today’s recurring problems.
This is our opportunity to adapt.
To lead differently.
To think smarter.
To be more intentional.
To make communities safer in meaningful and lasting ways.
Great moments are born from great opportunity.
In policing, this is ours to seize.
